Desk by the Window

A lamp, a record and rain on the window while you work.

You hear

• Rain on the window and the street beyondAll the time
• Soft electric piano chords from a small record playerAll the time
• Needle crackle and a faint record hissAll the time
• A single melody note drifting between chordsNow and then
• Drops tapping and trickling down the glassNow and then
• A scratch on the record ticks once per turnRarely
• Mug lifted and set downRarely

You see

A desk under a sliding window: books, a spiral notebook, a steaming yellow mug and a suitcase record player with a spinning record. Outside, rain falls on a brick house across the street, a street lamp and a tree in the wind. The record's scratch ticks each time it passes the needle.
