Jazz Bar Late

Low voices, ice in glasses and a record crackling in the corner.

You hear

• A record crackling, with a soft tick from a scratch on every turnAll the time
• A quiet jazz ballad from the record: electric piano and double bass, no drumsAll the time
• Rain behind the window and soft, dull taps of drops on the glassAll the time
• The bartender shaking, stirring or pouring a drink, ice moving with every motionNow and then
• A glass set down on the wooden counter and slid along it to the guestNow and then
• The guest at the counter sipping, the ice shifting in the glassNow and then
• A short, low exchange between the bartender and the guest, without wordsNow and then

You see

A quiet corner booth in a bar on a rainy night: a big window onto a wet street with a cyan neon sign across the road and a lone guest beside it, and a long counter under three lamps with shelves of bottles. One guest sits at the counter, seen from behind; the bartender stands side-on, slowly polishing a glass. About every two minutes he makes a drink and slides it along the counter to the guest, who sips it until the glass is empty. Up front sit our table with a whisky and a candle and a suitcase record player with the record turning.
